Financial History

As I explained on my homepage, I have an inclination to always keep an eye on the historic perspective. Throughout my career in the banking industry I tend to maintain this perspective.

In 2011 I have set up a guided
walking tour on Amsterdam financial history. Because what makes Amsterdam unique is that you can literally walk through our financial history in a 2-3 hour tour. And I very much enjoy doing so and explaining all about it. I've done this a couple of times now and also added an executive briefing to the programme (about payments in particular or a more generic overview of todays issues in the Dutch financial sector).

I also started a new weblog on the financial history of Amsterdam, so that I can publish bits and pieces of my research and findings. And if you like that weblog, you may also appreciate a booklet that I wrote in 2007 (just before the financial crisis started blossoming). In the booklet (which was a part of the annual report of the Dutch Bankers Association) I look back on the history of banking as the basis for further discussion (with professors Visser, Knot en Schoenmaker) of subjects as deposit guarantuee, too big too fail and so on.

Finally, I should point out that I still have some research and a book on payments/banking history pending. This started in 1999 with a proporal for Phd Research on the non-cash retail industry in the Netherlands in the twentieth century. And I hope to finalize a light-version of my work in the next year. You can read more about the research itself here (
English version) or here (Dutch version).
